The Get Ready With Me videos (GRWMs) have been around since 2011, but became massively popular in the past year, gaining over 165 billion views in that time.
In these videos, the creators talk about what they’re doing in the day or past stories that could be funny, sad or even both. They show how they get ready and the steps of them getting ready using unique items and wearing fun and interesting clothes to get ready and start the day or end the day.
“Jay Park, Lisa and Justin Han tell jokes throughout the video and it’s very funny,” said Freshman Brooke Bishop, who has watched these videos for years.
Sometimes, there will be commentary about the products the influencers are using in the videos such as the makeup and clothes they are using and wearing. They get sent packages full of products from companies for the creator to review.
“They’re interesting because when they’re getting ready they have cool stuff that they get ready with like the brands that they use makeup. This one girl uses her PR packages which are like when brands send you free stuff and they show it off,” Sophomore Natalie Melendez said.
These videos have also influenced the way people dress and their habits like their clothes, makeup and habits, including eating healthy, working out, waking up early and just an overall healthier lifestyle.
“I like wearing fun socks. The socks I’m wearing are Baby Yoda socks and I have a lot more fun socks with Twizzlers and Reese’s and Sour Patch Kids. A lot of food socks,” Melendez said.
Bishop’s style also has evolved.
“Some of their habits have rubbed off on me. My style changed a lot over the years because of these videos,” she said.
Diversity is another key component of the videos, highlighting how unique people are in their own small ways.
“So many people have so many styles and many different ways of getting ready, and they are all different and I like the diverseness of the videos. It’s cool to see how different certain people are from one another and their different aesthetics,” Sophomore Brianna Hatchett said.
They also inspire others to do their own little Get Ready With Me in the morning.
“Me and my friend facetime every morning and do our own little get ready with us,” Hatchett said.
