Dear future staff and readers,
If I am being honest I never even imagined myself being a writer or the editor of the Mirror. If it wasn’t for me not wanting to take a drawing class, I would have never even been in the newspaper. But, some may call it just good luck we are here.
One scheduling decision my freshman year landed me writing and crafting pieces I have loved from light hearted pieces to heavy stories that spark conversation. I have grown so much as a writer being able to become more confident in the skillset and making it a vocal point in my life to speak my mind and break barriers as a journalist.
I can even say my journey to becoming an editor was one I often reflect on. Ms. Skertic, the class sponsor, approached me after my first semester of writing, and told me I was quickly on my way to becoming editor.
This quick conversation changed my focus and realized that journalism allows so many opportunities on top of the connections that are life long. I could never repay the Mirror for giving me so many memories and pushing me to become better with every article.
Within the past few years with my journey with the Mirror there have been amazing editors I have looked up to like, Lauren Molenda, who was my editor. Being able to step up and try to be a good example for future writers has been my goal. Savannah Cantrell, the managing editor, has been my partner in crime when it has come to anything print and paper.
The memories and growth within the writers at the Mirror has been phenomenal, with each new set of writers pushing themselves to the limit. I thoroughly believe that the Mirror embraces the Pirate mentality of spotlighting our community, uplifting our peers, and being the next generation of the ones to give breaking news.
I loved being a part of the journalism program so much that I decided to continue my educational journey at Howard University with a major in Media, Journalism, and Television.
Sincerely,
Destiny Givens
