When senior, Cameron Fields, found out he was becoming the #1 singles player, he took it as a challenge.
“I have that pressure to get better and lead the team,” Fields said. “It drives me … I’ve gone out and won, and that kind of gives the rest of the team confidence.”
After being the second in singles for two years, Fields has created an unique way of playing tennis. Fields says he likes to work on his mistakes during the game.
“You have to just analyze how you play, how you lost the point, and that in return will set you up for what you need to do next.”
Being No. 1 means that Fields is consistently matched up with the opponent’s best player. That’s make Fields works to maintain a level head during a game, making it a point to stay calm.
“Staying consistent and not getting down on yourself whenever you miss a shot [is important],” he said. “Sometimes you get put into difficult situations, where you need to go out of your way to get the ball. You need to just keep preparing yourself for those situations and really take your time.”
Being a good teammate is also an important part of the game.
“When we finish our matches, we go on and cheer on our teammates,” Fields said. “After they score a point, we congratulate them and then that really puts them in a good mindset going forward.”
As the team works to improve their 5-6 record, Senior Jayden Valiant appreaciates Fields’ efforts.
“He is very supportive and encouraging,” Valiant said. “He’s actually one of the first people who really encouraged me to do better on the team.”
He is impressed by Fields’ playing style.
“He is not a fast player, but a very hard player,” Valiant said, “to where he just always makes his mark in the hardest way possible, so that the ball goes over the net every time.”
Senior Cole Hurst values Fields’ friendship as well as his leadership.
“I feel Cameron is pretty funny and easy going,” Hurst said “ He’ll talk to anyone, and is a kind of leader to everyone on the team.”
Hurst also admires his intelligence on the court.
“Cameron plays very smart,” Hurst said. “He knows exactly where he’s hitting the ball and why he hits it.”
Valiant believes Fields has proven that he deserves the No. 1 singles spot.
“ He has definitely earned that spot just with his hard work and dedication to being on the tennis team.”
