With the Halloween season coming around, horror movies are going to be everywhere; theaters, streaming services, and even in your own home.
Horror movies have a very diverse genre, with the villains ranging from regular human killers to possessed dolls, ghosts, monsters, and a shape shifting alien that can change into anyone. They can also take place anywhere, starting with a house, to a neighborhood, to outer space, and other dimensions.
“Trick R Treat (2007) is about a bus driver crashing his bus into a lake, killing the kids. But one of them comes back and kills people who aren’t in the Halloween spirit,” Sophomore Jealynn Arce said.
With these horror movies, sometimes the plot is too scary. This can alter somebody’s life – either for the better by helping them get over their fears or fueling their fears for the worse.
“I used to be so terrified like I remember that if I saw something small or like a small doll I would get scared or I’d have nightmares,” Sophomore Billy Williams said. “But these movies helped me get over my fears,”Sophomore Billy Williams said.
“When I was a little kid, every time I watched those movies they used to scare me, so now that’s built up trauma,” Sophomore Ethan Jones said.
With the majority of horror movies being fantastic, there comes some with some down sides: overused ideas, boring or dumb characters, cheap scares or no scares at all, or it can just be an overall bad movie.
“The female characters in them – why do they always have to be dumb? And I just feel like the characters in horror movies should be smarter,” Sophomore De’Andre Love said.
“Like most movies, some horror movies have like cheap jump scares, or the plot sucks, and they try to be scary or the plot is just like any other horror movie.” Wiliams said.
Even with these overplayed and overused ideas, horror movies have given us some of the greatest villains in history, and giving us so many wonderful memories: our first horror movie, our scariest our favorite. While watching, we just sit there and wait for the next jumpscare or who else is gonna die, helping us get over our fears with us forcing ourselves to sit down and watch these movies so we can help ourselves.
“Horror movies are fantastic, I think the reason why I watched horror movies so much and liked them is because it gives me an adrenaline rush or a thrill like you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Williams said. “You don’t know what the plot twist maybe so you watch it and it gives you that thrill, and I think other people should watch them and instead of being scared. It’s a good way to overcome somebody’s fears.” Williams said.
