The Penguin is the newest addition to the Matt Reeves Batman universe. The new show on Max follows Oswald Cobblepot or the Penguin in Gotham city after the death of Carmin Falcone, which left a hole in the criminal underground of Gotham, leading to a war to take over the Falcone familly. However, down to the bone, it is just a regular mafia show like The Sopranos with the gloomy Batman mood, but this is not a Batman-centered show. It just takes place in the same universe as him.
The show The Penguin stars (Colin Farell) as the Penguin. We also meet new characters like Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz), a desperate young man who is caught trying to break into the Penguin’s car, and Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) who comes back from Arkham Asylum after the death of her father. There is a gap in the criminal underworld of Gotham and we watch as the Falcones and the Maronis battle to take over the drug trade, and we find the Penguin and Vic in the middle of it.
It is a very solid mafia show, adding depth to a forgoten character from the Batman movie, and it does a good job at having the Penguin being an antihero, trying to prove himself and have a good life while helping out Vic with his struggles.
Though some people don’t like the fact that Batman is not included in the series, I am fine with it though and I still enjoy it and it puts a twist on some of the other Gotham set shows we’ve seen without Batman. Some other criticism for the show is that it feels unimagined and like every other mafia show, and I agree that it does follow the same format as other shows, but it is still a good antihero redemption.
If you jwant more of the Matt Reeves Batman universe then this show is for you or if you are looking for an action-packed villain to antihero redemption story, check out The Penguin.
