Halloween is right around the corner and some Merrillville High School students are getting their costumes ready for the day. While most people typically purchase their costume online or in stores, we have some students that plan to make their costumes themselves. Students also have a different preference in costume ideas, between scary costumes and friendly.
Juniors Pedro Hoefferle-Anaya and Alicia Martinez plan on going as matching characters for Halloween this year. They are going as Johnny and Mavis from the movie “Hotel Transylvania” which funny enough, they almost resemble the two characters.
“Since we are dating, we wanted to do something that related to one of our favorite movies, but also the characters in the movie were also in that type of relationship,” Hoefferle-Anya said.
While Hoefferle-Anaya’s costume will be mostly store bought, Martinez will be making parts of her costume.
“I usually thrift a costume, or use clothes I already have. This year I’m just using an old dress and crocheting some red and black tights,” she said.
Sophomore Ryan Lannom is making a huge 8-foot tall and 4-foot wide scythe prop for his costume. Ryan’s costume is pretty expensive, he estimates it cost between $300-$400.
“It’s this one character from a show I watch, his name is Dr. Stein from Soul Eater. I just rewatched it recently and I thought it’d be pretty cool to dress up as him,” Lannom said.
Lannom mainly shopped online for everything, but his huge scythe will be made from scratch.
“This is the first year actually making something this big,” he said. “I used to make some other stuff that was really small or I could just buy it online, but this blade is way too big and so I have to DIY it. It’s insane, the thing is huge.”
While those three costume ideas sound pretty friendly, there are also students that plan on dressing up as something scary for Halloween.
Senior Joel Joseph plans on dressing up as the Clown for Halloween this year since he enjoys scaring people.
“I’m going to be a clown so I can chase people around,” he said.
Joseph also does a mix of making his own costume as well as getting a store bought costume.
“I normally DIY it because sometimes I feel like it puts more into it, and I can make the adjustment that I need to.” he said, “but if I can’t do it, or I’m really lazy I’ll just buy it.”
The amount of creativity and diversity we have here at Merrillville High School is amazing. Around the country, Bob, the shrunken-headed ghost from the recent Beetlejuice movie, ranks No. 1 of Google searches, according to the company. Other popular searches, were Raygun, the viral break-dancer from the Olympics, and CatNap from the video game “Poppy Playtime.”
