So, this turned out to be a disappointing time for Spider-Man fans.
On October 18th of this year, Insomniac Games, the developers behind Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, announced that they have “no additional story content planned” for the game. Along with this news, they also revealed a PC version of the game that will be coming out on January 30th of 2025.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023) is the latest installment in the series, becoming the main sequel to the highly successful Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and a follow up to the successful spin-off game, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020). The game was met with instant praise on release, indicating that it did live up to the hype. As time went on however, the hype slowly died out, and people realized that the game, while extremely fun, wasn’t anything truly groundbreaking.
October 20th marked the one year anniversary of the game, two days after the DLC announcement. Fans were hoping for an announcement regarding new downloadable content. In fact, people took to Twitter (X) and asked nonstop if DLC was coming to the game. One person in particular stressed the importance of having new content in the game, calling it a “comfort swing game” at this point.
Insomniac finally answered the question, but it wasn’t the answer everyone wanted to hear. The response was that essentially the DLC had been scrapped and that they no longer had plans to release it anytime soon. Aside from this, however, the company also announced a PC version of the game coming to Steam. This version will have all the features from the first update, including new save files and the option to change time of day. PC players will also have many of the new in-game suits too.
Despite the announcement of the game coming to PC early next year, the damage had already been done. This news came as a blow to the spiderman fanbase. Many players were desperately waiting for new content to come out so the game would feel fresh once again. However, it seems that Insomniac Games single handedly turned the game from a must-play to an almost one-and-done experience.
The game had much potential, and at the start it was looking like the perfect spiderman game: major gameplay improvements from the first game, new villains to face off against, great voice acting, breathtaking graphics, action-packed scenarios, everything. Unfortunately, this news lessened the enjoyment factor from this game for many players.
Many appreciate how Spider-Man 2 was at release. It gained massive popularity and produced an experience like no other, and no doubt PC players will enjoy the game once it comes to Steam next year. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of what many players wanted in the first place. Now it seems that one person on Twitter (X) was right; the game is just used for comfort swinging now.
