As the girls’ basketball team prepares for another competitive season, the focus isn’t just on skills, strategy and winning games — it’s also on the traditions and team-building activities that help form the bond necessary to succeed both on and off the court.
One of the core values that the team holds dear is the importance of tradition. Senior Nyesha Davis explains how these traditions help create a sense of unity within the team.
“We’ve been doing some of the same traditions for a while now,” she said. “Before each game, we gather and pray for one another, our team, our game and the season.”
Another team bonding activity is going to Coach Straughter’s house where players and coaches spent time away from school to bond, share personal stories and engage in leadership-building exercises.
Senior Kylie Wells notes that the bonding is one of the best parts of the season.
“It’s really about getting to know each other beyond basketball,” she said. “We do team-building activities, but there are also moments where we sit down and talk about our dreams, our struggles, and what we want for the season. It helps us trust each other and play as a unit.”
While basketball practice and games are where the team shows its athletic prowess, it’s the time spent outside of those settings that strengthens the connection between teammates.
The team has started off strong with victories over Andrean, 54-30, and Munster, 68-42, in the first two games.
The players are determined to improve on last year’s performance, but they also want to grow as a cohesive unit that plays selflessly and supports one another.
“My personal goal is to become a stronger leader this season,” Wells, a team captain, said. “I want to help the younger players feel confident on the court and make sure we’re all working toward the same goal.”
To achieve their goals, the team is focusing on communication and maintaining a positive attitude, even when things get tough.
“We know that there will be challenging moments in the season, but if we stay positive, help each other out, and keep improving, we know we can achieve big things,” Senior Vivian McSpadden said.
The team’s ultimate goal is to secure a spot in the state tournament. But, as Coach Straughter said, “It’s not just about the wins and losses. It’s about how we grow as a team and how we support each other in every game.”
