Over 60 million people recently tuned in to Netflix to watch the highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, but nobody expected the outcome of this fight.
There has been loads of controversy surrounding this fight dating back to when Mike Tyson had a health scare that pushed back the fight several months, but the biggest shock was that a 27-year-old Jake Paul would be fighting a 58-year-old Mike Tyson.
There was also the concern that it was a lose-lose for Paul because if he lost he just lost to a 58-year-old retired boxer and if Paul wins he just beat a 58-year-old retired boxer. However, it was a win-win for Tyson because if he beat Paul then he’s still got some fight in him and if he loses he’s been retired for so long it doesn’t really count.
Going into the fight, many people thought Tyson was going to win it because all of the training videos for the promotion and all of his previous fights, and just by the way he carried himself leading up to the fight but come fight night everyone was shocked and heartbroken with the results.
“I was heartbroken,” Sophomore DeAndre Love said. “I’m a really big fan of Mike Tyson you know and I went back and I watched all his old fights and how he just used to destroy his opponents and just pick them apart limb from limb.
“He bite a guy’s ear off. Why couldn’t he bite Jake? It just didn’t make sense,” Love said, referencing the time Tyson bite Evander Holyfield’s ear during a fight.
Tyson has millions of fans around the world with people from his generation and the next and the next supporting him.
Tyson was the undisputed heavyweight champion and he holds the record for being the youngest boxer to win the WBC, WBA and IBF titles and he held those titles at the same time.
The same cannot be said about Jake Paul who started his career with a white-collar match and continued to fight retired fighters and non-boxers. However, some of the younger generation are more fond of Paul because they know him from his early career as an influencer, and followed him when he started his boxing debut.
“It probably would have been Jake either way because Mike is 58 and Jakes in his 20s,” Sophomore Daryahn Alcox said. “It just makes sense. Jake’s more relevant than Mike so that’s just the way the cookie crumbles.”
