In a show of community spirit and generosity, Merrillville High School hosted its annual blood drive on Thursday, November 21st, encouraging students, faculty, and staff to roll up their sleeves and donate to a cause that saves lives. The event, organized in partnership with the American Red Cross, was held in the school’s Basketball concourse from 8:00 am-1:30 pm.
Students, many of them first-time donors, eagerly participated, driven by the knowledge that their contributions would help hospitals across the region treat patients in need of blood for surgeries, trauma care, and various medical conditions.
“This is an incredible way for our school community to make a tangible difference,” said Samantha Sampson, a junior who donated for the first time. “It feels good to know that something as simple as donating blood can help save lives.”
The event was supported by HOSA, who volunteered their time to assist with registration and encourage their peers to participate. Teachers, Mrs. Todd and Mrs. Davis, who oversaw the event’s logistics, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming turnout.
“We are so proud of our students and staff for participating in this life-saving effort,” Mrs. Davis said. “Blood donations are always in demand, and it’s wonderful to see so many people stepping up to help.”
For many students, the blood drive served as an opportunity to learn about the importance of giving blood and the impact it can have on patients in need. A few students also shared their personal motivations for donating, citing family experiences or a desire to help those in critical need.
“It’s about making a difference, no matter how small,” said Senior Katelyn Bell-Logan, one of the repeat donors. “You don’t realize how important this is until you see the numbers and hear the stories about how donated blood saves lives.”
The event was not only a success in terms of donations, but it also reinforced the school’s commitment to community service and civic responsibility. The blood drive highlighted the power of giving back, and for many, it marked the beginning of a long tradition of helping those in need.
For those who missed this opportunity, the school has this event yearly and plans to host another blood drive around the same time next year. Students and staff are encouraged to continue supporting the cause in any way they can.
