When I got word of there being a new Tyler the Creator album on its way, I was more than ready to listen to not only great music, but also see how he was going to outdo himself once again.
It’s been more than three years since Tyler’s last album “Call Me If You Get Lost” was released. This album went on to win the “best rap album” award from the 2022 grammy award.
Chromakopia is a complex album that dives into authentic emotions and real world experiences that he has faced during his upbringing as a person and as an artist. In his previous album, he celebrates and flaunts his success, money, fame, journey, and his ill-natured relationships like a victory-lap.
In this album however, he takes a more critical stance in breaking down his ego and grandiosity, bringing him back down to earth. In the song “Darling, I” he mentions many of these things like, “Until I get infatuated with a new —– but when that gray hair finally come At least I felt somethin’ if I ain’t find the one Nobody can fulfill me like this music —- does So I’ll be lonely with these Grammys when it’s all said and done, c’mon.” and “Claim you never wore a mask and how you don’t get embarrassed boy, you selfish as f—, that’s really why you scared of bein’ a parent boy, that therapy needed, I dare you to seek it, but I’ll lose a bet”
Tyler took inspiration from a well acclaimed album called “Mr Morale and the Big Steppers” by Kendrick Lamar. In Lamar’s work, he expressed himself and his personal trauma at an authentic level. Tyler talked about this in an interview stating “We have to cut the bs and just start being super open and honest.”. Tyler is well-known for his “weird” personality, but never fails to create and explore his creativity to give quality music to his fans.
This album was a great variety of realism, and pure classic fun, which is Tyler as a person. In my opinion this album is one of Tyler’s better works with it being an experiment and all. I would like to give this album a 10/10. To a general listener outside of all the details, it’s truly great music.
