With the college football national championship approaching on Monday, there are different reactions to the expansion of four to twelve teams for playoff play. Ohio State and Notre Dame will face off in the championship game, both teams would not be in the playoffs if the format of the playoffs wasn’t changed.
Mr. Pat Winters, believes that the expansion has made the season more interesting.
“It has allowed teams to have a slip up at the beginning of the season, and still be able to improve throughout the year,” he said.
However, Winters has mixed feelings on the excitement of the playoffs. “The playoffs have been exciting to look forward to watching, but the actual games haven’t been exciting,” Winters said.
On the other hand, Mr. Anthony Curry thinks it makes the playoffs more exciting all around with more football to watch. “I have three to four weeks to watch college football now versus just the two weeks from last year with four eam playoffs,” Curry said.
With the expansion Curry likes the advantage for teams like Boise State that would’ve never made four-team playoffs. “It gives teams more of an opportunity to join the playoffs,” Curry said.
Mr. Robert Bedwell agrees on the expansion being a good change for college football. “ The level of excitement has been amazing compared to years in the past,” Bedwell said.
While the formula is far from perfect, the new system for college football not only promotes fairness, but also brings more entertainment.
“I’m just happy this year for instance that Indiana was able to be in the potential title game and this has been the most exciting college football has been in the last 40 to 50 years for me personally,” Bedwell said.
