Senior Kylie Wells recently reached one of her many goals by getting 1,000 career points for the girls basketball team.
“It meant a lot because it was harder to do it in three years rather than four, so still being able to reach the goal that I was striving for since I came into high school was a really emotional moment,” Wells said.
Wells’ has always had high expectations for herself ever since becoming a varsity starter her freshman year.
“My goals coming into high school were to win Sectionals, make it to 1,000 points, go division one for basketball and eventually become the top leading scorer in Merrillville history,” she said.
While Wells is a senior, she has had plenty of career games cut short due to obstacles.
“Getting injured my sophomore year, I tore my Achilles, then the recovery coming back and having to get over the mental part of trusting my body again from the injury,” she said.
With a lot of odds against her, Wells continued to fight and never gave up on her end goal.
“I overcame these challenges by taking everything one day at a time,” she said. “I tried to not think too much about where I was at in the journey, but just focusing on my end goal which was getting back on the court and being better than before. Sometimes I would be happy about the way recovery was going and other days I would be really sad about it, but I realized I had to be leveled about recovery.”
Throughout Wells’ career, she has had plenty of help to get her to this level.
“First thing is God because he is top priority, second thing is my teammates throughout the years. Of course I wouldn’t be able to score if they didn’t pass to me and trust me. Also my parents, encouraging me to watch film, helping me with take better shots, and helping me improve
every game as a player,” Wells said.
Although she just accomplished an enormous career milestone, Wells is far from being done chasing her goals and achievements as she has a bright future ahead.
“I want to make the all state team, be all conference MVP, and win state,” she said, “but I want to start at Sectionals first and then take it step by step. As for college basketball, I haven’t decided on where I’m going yet.”
