With no Seniors on the team this year, Junior Gymnast Corynn Morgan has had to step up and be a leader for a team that has so many Freshman.
Corynn offers some encouraging advice for the Freshman.
“You have time to get better, so just keep working for it and don’t get lazy,” Corynn said. “ Sleep and eat right to help your body.”
With Sectionals coming up Corynn uses that as key motivation for when things don’t go their way.
“When I want to quit or when I do bad, I refocus and tell myself there’s still Sectionals and Regionals, DAC, and State,” Corynn said.
Corynn has been working since the beginning of the season with sectionals in mind.
“I worked really hard to get my scores up, so I can place at least top 6 at sectionals,” Corynn said.
Making it to State means more to Corynn than doing it to herself; she uses her sister as motivation.
“My sister broke her back her senior year, and she didn’t go to State. So I would want to do that for her,” Corynn said.
Not only does Corynn hold herself accountable, but also the Freshman on her team.
“I make sure to tell them how they can fix it and if they are frustrated I give them space or words of encouragement,” Corynn said.
Freshman Gymnast Rhylie Spiering benefits from such encouragement.
“If I do something wrong she always tells me how to fix it and she never discourages me,” Rhylie said. “She instead pushes me to get better at the skill.”
Rhylie is inspired by Corynn to keep going when she has rough days during competitions or practices.
“For example, if I don’t think about everything that happened that day, and go out and do my best it really doesn’t matter,” Rhylie said. “Whenever I’m down she just helps me get happy again.”
Rhylie admires Corynn not only as a gymnast but as a person.
“She always brings out the better in me,” Rhylie said.
