The new slasher horror, dark comedy Heart Eyes, directed by Josh Ruben is carving out a piece out of Halloween, and adding n romantic twist to horror starring Mason Gooding as Jay and Olivia Holt as Ally. As someone who is not a big fan of horror, I wanted to give the movie a try.
The movie was great, I saw it the day it came out, and the movie didn’t disappoint
Right off the bat the movie jumps into three deaths, which jumpstart the Heart Eyes killings again. Heart Eyes come out every Valentine’s Day to kill couples and after a murder at a nail salon and Ally and Jay soon become the target of the killer. After a long series of tragedies, tribulations and deaths, Ally and Jay come face to face with heart eyes and have to fight him off.
Director Josh Ruben does not disappoint when it comes to making horror movies. The dark comedy with the jaw-dropping kills, and fast combat and the characters actually fighting back adds life to the genre that it desperately needs.
One thing I did like was how the fast story and how we see Ally and Jay’s relationship bloom over the day. With Ally not being able to love anyone and Jay being ghosted after every relationship, seeing them get together just makes sense for the plot. In addition, the final act was good because of the irony of the twist and the last two kills that wrap up the movie.
But a few things I didn’t like about the movie was the fact that some of the kills were predictable with the direction of the kills and the killer getting away after one second when the main character looked away. Besides that, some of the jokes fall flat and take away the tension. Another thing I didn’t like was the post credit scene hinting at a new movie but not at the same time.
Even with the flaws, Heart Eyes is still something I would recommend people to watch — and this comes from a non-horror fan who enjoyed it.
