For the first time in Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC) history, both the girl’s and boy’s track and field team both won DAC championships in the same year. They followed up that achievement with Sectional titles, and now the boys hope to follow the girls as Regional champions.
A key stand out on the boy’s track and field team is senior Keon Strong, who won both the 300 meter and 110 meter hurdle championships.
“It felt amazing to become DAC champion. Looking back at last year, we fell short and I didn’t perform my best. We knew what we had to do to win and we executed and brought home the title,” Keon said.
Coach Patrick Coffey is proud of the team, staff, and the work that they have put in.
“Our kids have been working hard for months and it’s great to see that hard work pay off. Our program takes great pride in doing things the right way and when you’re held to a high standard, success is the only option,” Coach Coffey said. “They have created a true family environment and support each other.”
Keon also won the 300- and 110-meter hurdles at Sectionals, joined by fellow champions Curtis Walker in the 100-meter dash, Mikel Smoot in the 400-meter dash, Josiah Jones in the high jump, Josiah Becton in the long jump, and the 4×400 team relay team.
“Our goal is to always get as many kids to the State Meet as we can, and that starts with performing well at sectionals. Nothing is given in track and field, so they need to go earn their spots at State,” Coach Coffey said.
The boys prepare for regionals on Thursday.
“We have what it takes to be champions. We just have to leave our best on the track and let the momentum continue into Regionals and the State Finals,” Keon said.
