The Newman brothers didn’t grow up swimming, but they found their way to the pool at MHS and are finding success and enjoying their

year together as teammates.
“I mean he’s my brother. If you have family, you know how it feels like being able to be around your brother all day. It’s just really nice,” Freshman Nicholas Newman said.
His brother feels the same way.
“It’s awesome being on the same team as my brother,” Noah said,
Noah specializes in freestyle events, often winning first place. A highlight was a victory in the 50m freestyle against powerhouse Chesterton. He has surpassed his own expectations.
“It makes me feel good considering I barely won last year and the year before,” Noah said. “I’ve always been good at adapting and bouncing back, and swimming has only made me better at that”
His big brother’s participation influenced Nicholas to join the team.
“I swam a little bit in the seventh grade,” he said. “I never really thought about swimming again until Noah tried it out and I went to a couple conditionings and I ended up liking it.”
But living up to his brother’s success can be difficult.
“I feel like I have got to compete with that and I have to live up to those expectations,” Nicholas said.
Noah believes success comes from having the right mindset.
“A successful swimmer will stop at nothing to be successful, and a mediocre swimmer will be okay with being mediocre,” he said.
Along with the right mindset, swimmers must have healthy lifestyle habits.
“My diet, rest, and recovery boost my performance in the water. Making sure I get 8 hours minimum of sleep, eating a lot of carbs and clean food, and stretching regularly works the best for me,” Noah said
With Sectionals coming up this week, Noah is looking at ending his senior season on a positive note.
“My goals for this year are to place at Sectionals, make more memories, and have a good time overall.”
