Senior Jac’Quarius (JQ) Johnson and Junior Cameron Jordan have turned into a dual threat on the football field. From mentorship, to friendship, to now working alongside each other, they have paved the way for the Pirates success going into Sectionals.
JQ has scored eight touchdowns rushing and two receiving, while Cameron has 11, six rushing and five receiving. They strengthen their own weaknesses with help from each other. What one struggles with, the other excels in.
They became acquainted when JQ attended Cameron’s games when Cameron was in 8th grade.
“I remember watching him score five touchdowns when he was in middle school,” JQ said.
Once Cameron started high school, the two have had a tight friendship. They learn from each other, which helps out on the field.
“…but he tells me what routes I got and I tell him who to block,” JQ said. “We got this little package with both of us in the backfield and we both made sure each other knew what we’re doing and what the game plan was..
Their partnership is what leads the two to success, ultimately benefitting the team as well.
“Them being unselfish and wanting what is best for the team has allowed us to flourish and be our best,” Offensive Coordinator Josh Sabinas said.
Not only is the team flourishing, but the game changes for Cameron having JQ by his side.
“Us being friends outside of football, makes it easier to just play for one another” Cameron said.
With JQ’s high school football career coming to an end, it leaves him looking back at moments where he was proudest of Cam.
“In the Lake Central game last year, the opening drive, he took it for 70 yards right down the sidelines,” JQ said. “Right when I got hurt he stepped up”.
Throughout the season, Cameron has been willing to play other positions, which is why he was able to step up for JQ. His work ethic is similar to JQ’s, which Cameron admires.
“The best thing I’ve learned from him is to always work hard,” Cameron said. “His hard work and his grit and how he plays for everybody on the team and his advice and everything.”
As the season wraps up, Cameron’s faces the prospect of going solo next year, but JQ has hopes for him.
“I want him to take over and build his own legacy,” JQ said. “I want him to get all-state. I hope he’ll be MVP of his season.”
